The Riverton Prize

The Riverton Prize, the leading Norwegian prize for crime fiction, also called the Golden Gun, has been awarded annually since 1972 to feature films, television dramas, and radio plays as well as crime novels. The award was named after the early Norwegian mystery author Stein Riverton and is the collaborative effort of the Riverton Club, the Norwegian Publishers Association, and the Norwegian Book Club, to promote the quantity and quality of Norwegian crime fiction. The physical prize itself is actually a “golden gun,” a Nagantrevolver, a Belgian-made handgun with a gold stock, inspired by the two gold dueling pistols owned by author Stein Riverton’s fictional detective Asbjørn Krag. Norwegian police used the Nagantrevolver at the time Krag was working as a detective. Two other awards, the Riverton Club Award and the Riverton Club International Award, are also “Golden Guns,” given to individuals who according to Nils Nordberg, ‘have made a special effort [for] Norwegian crime fiction, at home or abroad (Nordberg, “Murderers’ Cheerful Siblings”).
